Former Executive Vice President Gerald M. Sass, a founding member of the Media, Democracy & Policy Initiative since 2004, currently is a consultant to the Freedom Forum, a non-partisan foundation dedicated to free press, free speech and free spirit. He served 20 years with that organization and retired as executive vice president. Prior to that Sass was director of personnel for the international media company, Gannett. He had also been an executive with the Rochester, NY Democrat & Chronicle and The Times Union. Sass is a graduate of Niagara University and the University of Chicago and also did doctoral work at Cornell University. Sass currently serves on the advisory boards of the International Center for Journalists, the Communications Institute, the Al Neuharth Media Center at the University of South Dakota and the advisory council of the University of Arizona Department of Journalism. Sass is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, the American Society for Training and Development and the Society for Human Resource Management. He is a life member of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and a life associate member of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication. Prior public service includes six years as a member of the board of directors of the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, twenty years on the executive committee of University of Hawaii Asia Fellowships Program, two years on the board of Youth Communications and 20 years on the board of the Mary Cariola Children’s Center in Rochester, NY He and his spouse, Lorey, live in Marana, Arizona.
