Looking Towards El Norte

March 11, 2004
Sásabe, Mexico

Duct tape holds a figure of Christ on an illuminated crucifix that overlooks the border from a hilltop migrant's shrine. People from the interior of Mexico who are committed to crossing the harsh Arizona desert, stop here to light a votive candle and pray for safe passage. Smugglers navigate northbound by guiding on Baboquivari Mountain, the distinctive peak deep inside the Tohono O'odham reservation. The mountain is home to the Tohono Holy Spirit.
