Pulitzer Project
view Symposium Schedule for October 8, 2004

In 2004, MDPI recognized the 20 year anniversary of the 1984 Pulitzer won by a team of Latino reporters at the Los Angeles Times. The significance of this award opened the door to future journalists. At the time, media owners failed to hire and promote Latino journalists although they were beginning to recognize they had a responsibility to do so. MDPI re-united the team at the University of Arizona where their achievements were recognized. A symposium, an exhibit of the work and the actual Pulitzer was displayed. Among the speakers at the events were then UA President Peter Likins, then Los Angeles Times Editor John Carroll and Michael Pulitzer, grandson to Joseph Pulitzer, for whom the award is named. The project brought attention to a current report that indicated that more Latinos were leaving the industry than entering - indicating that there will be less representation in the media than since the 1984 Pulitzer.

In 2007 MDPI produced "Below the Fold: The Pulitzer that Defined Latino Journalism" telling the story of the 1984 Pulitzer Prize winning team in their own words.
